Carl Frederick Binder was born in 1887 in Biesingen, in the Black Forest region of southern Germany. He received rigorous academic training in Europe, studying first at the Kunstgewerbeschule (often referenced in period sources as the Knackfuss School) in Kassel and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
