Medium: Bronze

Dimensions:

18 in. h. x 18 in. w. x 18.5 in. d.

Description:

Based on the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a Hellenistic sculpture dating to the 2nd century BC, the figure of Nike was adapted in many ways and is used in the 19th-century Vittorio Emanuele II Monument in Rome. The goddess is typically shown alighting on a sphere, holding a laurel wreath and a bow. Her stance suggests that these attributions were once intact, surely a treasure for a Grand Tour traveler in the 19th century.
