Description:

The "Preliminaries," at Madison Square Garden, depicts the first boxing event to which women were admitted. Accordingly, many members of the upper classes attended the event. In this particular drawing, which was also reproduced in lithograph form, Bellows put the emphasis on this new audience, composed of well dressed women and men in top hats as they come out to see the spectacle of the fight. This is in opposition to the earlier works where the audience is represented as secondary and more vulgar.
