WOLFS is proud to announce its Fall show featuring John T. Sharp (b. 1943, Ohio), one of America’s leading wildlife wood sculptors. Sharp is an award-winning master carver who studied architecture and industrial design at Kent State University. He worked in the commercial design industry for 18 years before becoming a full-time sculptor in the eighties. Inspired by his love for wildlife and the medium of wood, Sharp creates stunning life-size sculptures hewn from a single log, channeling both the American folk art tradition of wildfowl decoys and the dynamism of early modern European still life painting.
The exhibition will feature a special selection of one-piece reductions carved from local American hardwoods, including black walnut and cherry. Each work begins not with a sketch or predetermined design, but with the wood itself. Sharp carefully selects an individual section of log for its proportions and distinctive grain patterns, allowing the natural character of the material to inspire and ultimately shape the finished sculpture. Working around the central axis of the grain, Sharp exploits the wood's lines and rings to create rhythmic surface effects that bring his subjects to life. Using as many as 30-40 specialized carving tools, he gradually coaxes each form, then meticulously sands the surface and applies layers of linseed oil. The resulting finish brings remarkable depth and luminosity to the wood, revealing grain and color variations that make every sculpture inherently unique. As he explains, the refined finish “emphasizes the form and conveys the subject” in a distinctive form of stylized realism that balances exceptional craftsmanship with an appreciation for the material's natural beauty. Whether depicting an elegant still life or a whimsical wildlife scene, Sharp transforms familiar forms into engaging sculptural masterpieces whose warmth, tactile beauty, and individuality invite both close examination and lasting enjoyment.
His career in fine art wood carving has earned him major recognition for his awe-inspiring, integral pieces, leading the field with three decades of awards at the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland, and the Master Wildlife Artist Award from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1996.
His work is held in private, corporate, and public collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (Cleveland, Ohio), the MBNA Bank, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum (Wausau, Wisconsin), the Genesee Country Museum (Mumford, New York), the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art (Salisbury, Maryland), the Algonquin Gallery and Museum (Ontario, Canada), and the Nature in Art Museum and Gallery (Gloucester, England).
