Raymond Nott was an American pastelist and painter, very well known for the quality of his almost velvety surface pastels particularly, though he did also work in oil. Landscapes, whether of the desert, temperate country, or seascapes, are his best known subject matter.
Nott was born in Kirksville, Montana on April 20, 1887. After his parents separated, Raymond's mother operated a chain of variety stores in the Black Hills where he was raised. Early in life he attended a military school and studied at the AIC. He was later associated with the Roycroft Studios in New York where his mother ran a weaving school.
After joining the Navy at the outbreak of WWI, he was sent to San Diego, CA. Upon discharge, he settled in Los Angeles where his paintings were handled by the Bernay Gallery. Working in pastel and oil, he produced mountain landscapes until his death in Los Angeles on Dec. 6, 1948.
