Description:
A very fine pair of 17th Century Japanese screens attributed to Kitagawa Sosetsu, third-generation follower of Tawaraya Sotatsu. These Edo period screens have come down through the family of important patrons of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and it is their descendants' understanding that the screens were acquired at the behest of Sherman Lee, then the director of the Cleveland Museum and noted authority on Japanese art. These screens relate closely to another pair of Sosetsu screens in the Museum’s collection which were also acquired under Lee. http://www.clevelandart.org/art/1968.193.1
